The company was founded by Paul Mijksenaar in 1986 and 2011 sees the 25th anniversary of the Dutch firm.

In the fall of 2002 Mijksenaar established an office in New York; Mijksenaar Arup Wayfinding.
Since then, the firm has developed various wayfinding and consultancy projects for other North-American airports.
Wayfinding ConceptIn a schematic description the process steps of the various users are brought into vision. In this way, the processes are made clear. Also, the program of requirements is drawn up. The process description is the starting point for the wayfinding concept.
The outcome is a process description, a list of destinations and an analysis with a concise list of bottlenecks.
All the above will result in a report or wayfinding concept with flowcharts, routes and decision points as well as a list of information elements to design.
The final wayfinding concept is developed into a graphic as well as a spatial wayfinding design. This results into a preliminary design of main information carriers. This design is detailed on three elements: identification, directions and information.
Airport SignageIn this phase the final graphic and spatial (functional) design of airport signage is laid in a description of the desired realization outline. This results into a presentation and report containing: detailed layouts with final texts, dimensions of the system and a description of the construction and selection of materials.
Mijksenaar details the functional specifications of the spatial design. Technical specifications are made by the manufacturer based on these functional design.

The wayfinding system needs to be taken care of by a specially appointed person or department.
Mijksenaar advises the client to make this person or department responsible for keeping up the high quality of the system and consider even smaller changes within the total concept.
What is Wayfinding?All wayfinding projects have one common factor. Whether they are large scale or small scale, long term or short term, for public spaces or for commercial enterprises, for novice visitors or for employees, indoor or outdoor, for pedestrians or for car drivers, all wayfinding projects are intended to be used by people. This means that all wayfinding projects will have to take human perception and human psychology in mind.
Human perception and human psychology are remarkably consistent. In an ever changing society with an ever changing environment we learn how to cope with more and more visual input. The basics behind this visual input however – color contrast, field of vision, visual cues for building entrances and exits, categorization of messages, et cetera – remain the same.
Why is Wayfinding important?Unfamiliar spaces and environments lead to stress.
A well-designed wayfinding system that guides people through a space makes their new surroundings easier to use and more enjoyable. Well-understood spaces are safer to use and easier to maintain, thus reducing the need for (human) operator involvement in directing visitors.
