Norfolk International Airport has chosen Gresham, Smith and Partners to provide architectural planning and design services for its passenger terminal modernisation project.

The Virginia airport plans to update and enhance the facility in order to improve the overall passenger experience and extend the life of the terminal by introducing advanced screening technology and expanding its security checkpoint.

“Our airport is the gateway to Southeastern Virginia, and these terminal modifications will better enable us to provide a welcoming and enjoyable experience to those travelling through our region," said Wayne Shank, executive director, Norfolk Airport Authority.

The modernisation project will also include the installation of energy-efficient glazing and a skylight is being designed in the Departure building to introduce more natural light into the terminal. Durable material will be used for flooring, walls and escalators and exterior walkways will be enhanced to add visual interest and improve safety.

"Through these refurbishment efforts, we aim to create a more efficient facility that is easy to maintain, supports the airport's interest in environmental stewardship and helps the airport to be preferred by air travellers in the region," said David King, AIA, division vice president, Gresham, Smith and Partners.
