Calgary International Airport has announced that its International Facilities Project, one of two parts of the US$2bn Airport Development Program, is well underway with a scheduled completion date of fall 2015. The second part of the program involves a major runway extension.

The facilities project will see the terminal space more than double in size with 600,000ft2 of space and 22 additional aircraft gates. Calgary Airport Authority who operate the airport have also announced that a number of additional elements are being incorporated into the program including an airside corridor, moving walkways and a new Compact Transit System, which can carry up to 10 passengers at a time between concourses.

Garth Atkinson, president and CEO for Calgary Airport Authority, said, “Working with regulators and airlines, we are able to integrate new processes for the 30% of travelers that use Calgary International as their connecting airport. These new processes will allow our passengers to easily transit to all destinations that are available from the airport. Additionally, the unique Compact Transit System supports our business strategy to grow the airport as an airline hub. All of these new elements have been put in place to further enhance the passenger experience at Calgary Airport.”

A statement released by Calgary Airport reports that 95% of radiant tubing, 56% of the granite flooring, 57% of the wood ceiling paneling and 83% of the new baggage handling equipment has been successfully installed. This has taken approximately 6.9 million man-hours to date.
