Plans have been unveiled for the expansion of Faro Airport in Portugal after the airport operators, Vinci Airports and ANA Aeroportos de Portugal, signed an agreement with construction firm Mota-Engil.

Construction work will begin in October 2016 and will involve expanding the terminal from approximately 874,000ft2 to 1,002,300ft2. This will include expanding and revitalizing the retail area, increasing security, modernizing the image of the terminal, and creating more operating and public areas. The €32.8m (US$36.3m) project is due for completion in March 2017.

The operator hopes that the expanded terminal capacity will increase the maximum number of passenger movements from 2,400 to 3,000 per hour. To accommodate the increased capacity, changes will also be made to the road network, car parks, lighting, walkways and landscaping.
