French workers will go on general strike from 6pm this evening (September 6), including French Air Traffic Control.

The French National Aviation Authority has limited the number of flights to and from France, for all airlines.

The walkout will end at 6am on Thursday (September 8).

French national carrier Air France has been forced to cancel 50% of its short and medium-haul flights at Paris-Orly.

Ffrom Paris-Charles de Gaulle it will operate 90% of short and medium-haul flights.

However, the airline said it will re-route customers to ensure it can operate 100% of long-haul flights.

Passengers may fly via Amsterdam with sister airline KLM, said Air France, or with another Skyteam alliance partner.

Passengers have been advised to the status of their flights before travelling to the airport, on the airline's homepage.

The walkout is over French president Nicolas Sarkozy's plans to raise the retirement age in France from 60 to 62.
