The Challenge

The continual monitoring of runway surfaces is not only mandatory under international guidelines but important for whole-life management of an airports most critical asset.

With ICAO Annex 14 changing, a greater emphasis is being placed on pavement condition. This includes the mandatory assessment of Pavement Condition and the extra importance on airports operating a scheduled Pavement Management System (PMS). Part of this includes the move from the old ACN/PCR calculations to ACR/PCR.

A PMS will combine Heavy Weight Deflectometer, Pavement Condition Index (PCI), Friction and Roughness (IRI/BBI) surveys to give a snapshot of the condition of the pavement.

The management of the large volumes of data produced by a PMS creates a challenge for airports as this data needs to be viewed, analysed and used to make maintenance decisions.
