Automated baggage check-in possible around the clock / New design offers more space and comfort / Components for biometric and contactless processes are already pre-installed

As of today, 21 state-of-the-art check-in counters in Terminal 1, Departure Halls A and B are available to Lufthansa Group passengers at Frankfurt Airport. With the automated bag drop function, travelers can now check in their luggage even faster and more conveniently, regardless of counter opening hours. Baggage check-in by Lufthansa service staff is still possible. In addition, the technical prerequisites have already been created for biometric check-ins in the future.

“The new check-in counters enable passengers in FRA to have a comfortable, modern and efficient travel experience, right from their first stop in the terminal. The use of state-of-the-art technology optimizes baggage check-in processes,” explains Pierre Dominique Prümm, Member of the Board of Management for Aviation and Infrastructure at Fraport AG. “My special thanks go to the entire team that implemented this challenging project in record time. We work continuously with all our partners to ensure that our passengers’ pleasant journey begins with us at Frankfurt Airport.”

“We want to grow together – in the medium and long term. And that is only possible with a smoothly functioning infrastructure,” says Jens Ritter, Chief Executive Officer Lufthansa Airlines. “Because passengers make the same demands on airport operators and airlines on their journey: the right information at exactly the right time. The choice of whether to rely on digitization or whether to let the staff help you. Short distances and short waiting times. Finally, the journey begins on the ground. And from now on we are better positioned here in Frankfurt with the new bag-drop machines.”

All partners involved implemented the new check-in counters in two construction phases of around six months each. The old counters were dismantled, including a large part of the technical false ceiling, which connects the counters to the baggage conveyor system.

The technical planning and development of the baggage drop-off machine was carried out by Fraport in close cooperation with Lufthansa. The new design comes from the design office Marcus Pedersen and the network architects, the technical realization from the companies Bleichert and Profluss. The investment costs for Fraport AG amount to around 20 million euros.

The current construction project includes the 300 and 200 check-in counters for Lufthansa. The airport operator will also be equipping other terminal areas with the new generation of machines in the future.

With the project, Fraport and all partners are implementing another milestone in the continuous improvement of the infrastructure at Frankfurt Airport.
