Company Fraport AG
Date 14.06.2023

Around 5.6 million passengers at Frankfurt Airport / growth of 11.3 percent compared to the previous year / 1st half-year with an increase of 29.1 percent / International airport holdings also continue to grow in double digits

Around 5.6 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport in June. This corresponded to an increase of 11.3 percent compared to the same month of 2022. For the first time since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, daily traffic exceeded 200,000 passengers. This mark was already exceeded on three days in June and thus before the start of the summer travel wave. For comparison: in 2022 as a whole, the volume in Frankfurt recorded over 180,000 travelers on only five days. The current monthly value was still 15.6 percent away from the traffic volume in June 2019 1 .

In the first half of the year, a total of around 26.9 million passengers used Frankfurt Airport, an increase of 29.1 percent compared to the same period in 2022. The volume was still 20.1 percent away from the first half of 2019.

dr Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG: “The ongoing recovery in passenger demand is both a pleasure and a challenge for us. We are continuing to prepare intensively for the summer travel wave with all process partners. The generally orderly course of business in the first half of the year makes us cautiously optimistic for Frankfurt and shows that the numerous measures introduced are taking effect. We continue to see a more rapid recovery at our international airport holdings, which are heavily influenced by tourism. In addition to our Greek airports, which have already exceeded the pre-crisis level, we expect other locations to come close to the pre-crisis level over the course of the year.”

The volume of cargo in Frankfurt continued to decline in the reporting month at 160,047 tons. It was 4.6 percent below the same month of 2022. The cause remained the general economic slowdown. The number of flight movements increased by 8.4 percent to 38,885 take-offs and landings. The sum of the maximum take-off weights grew by 8.4 percent to around 2.4 million tons (compared to June 2022 in each case).

Traffic in the international portfolio also continued to increase. Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia counted 128,534 passengers (up 25.5 percent) in the month under review. The volume of passengers at the Brazilian airports Fortaleza and Porto Alegre rose to 1.1 million (plus 12.6 percent). The airport in Lima, Peru recorded around 1.7 million passengers in June (up 13.8 percent). At the 14 Greek regional airports, the number of passengers rose to around 5.0 million (plus 13.7 percent). The twin star airports of Burgas and Varna in Bulgaria increased by 30.5 percent to 550,641 passengers. The number of passengers at Turkey’s Antalya Airport increased to 4.5 million passengers (plus 15.9 percent).
